Site: A shared inner courtyard in a small settlement of ten independent residences. The courtyard is shared by the residents but not accessible to the public. The installation explores the relationship between memory, place, and olfaction. The work begins from the idea that places are also shaped by the experiences, moments, and traces of the people who inhabit them. The space is approached as a lived experience and translated into olfactory objects. Through interviews with the residents, I collect memories and small moments from everyday life. I am interested in subtle experiences that can connect a person to a place. These memories are translated into olfactory compositions. Smells function as a way of evoking the sensation and atmosphere of an experience.
Through experimentation, I developed a vocabulary that connects smells with narratives, allowing smells to acquire qualities such as closed/open, presence/absence etc. Smell takes on a material form, where the vessel containing it participates in the way the memory is perceived. The installation consists of a series of olfactory objects that create a new kind of experience. The visitor is invited to engage with smells that function as traces connecting different people and different times
